Ruling allies patronising criminals: Opposition
Day of high politics in Shaleen murder case
6/16/2010 1:05:34 AM
ARTEEV SHARMA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 15: It was a day of high politics in recent tragic case of Shaleen's brutal murder for ransom, with three major political parties trying to take on rivals, of course with some 'space and spice' for condemnation, sympathy and indeed the final demand for probe.
In the backdrop of Shaleen's kidnapping and brutal killing by two local criminals for extortion, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today accused the ruling National Conference of "patronizing" the criminals and "institutionalizing" crime in Jammu.
"If one goes through the reports appeared in a section of media, it seems that the criminals are enjoying the patronization of NC leaders. The crime is being institutionalized in Jammu with the patronization of politicians and land mafia. Jammu seems to have become haven for land and drug mafia," furious Mehbooba told reporters here.
The PDP chief, who was in the city for last three days, alleged that nexus between land mafia, drugs smugglers and politicians has created insecurity among the common masses in Jammu as well in Kashmir valley.
"The ruling party has allowed institutionalization of the crime and in most of the criminal incidents either the NC leaders were involved or their workers have hand in the glove with land and drug mafia. Be that the Amandeep murder case or Shaleen's murder, people having connection with the ruling party had patronized the criminals," she alleged.
She further alleged, "It is very unfortunate that criminals are getting patronage from the politicians and that too, from ruling party. They either get scot-free from law or they are not apprehended at all. I had a talk with a senior police officer regarding such criminal cases and they responded that there was always a political pressure to hush up the case."
The PDP leader said that the first-ever incident of kidnapping and killing for ransom has opened the 'Pandora Box' of the claims made by the coalition government particularly Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that there has been decrease in the crime cases in Jammu.
"The crime rate has increased in Jammu particularly in past one and a half year since the NC took the charge of the State. The criminals have no fear of law and order and if we go through the media reports regarding kidnapping and killing of Shaleen, a senior NC leader, T S Wazir had given political patronage to one of the killers and had asked for his release from custody," she said.
"Earlier, crime used to be limited for land grabbing but now the murder, kidnapping and chain snatching cases have increased and the way such incidents have been taking place, Jammu may turn into another Bihar in days to come," she said.
"The state government should not put the case into back burner as it should be a test case on fast track basis so that eroded confidence of people of Jammu is restored," she maintained.
Alleging that complete unrest is prevailing across the State, the PDP leader said that the situation in Jammu is more dangerous than Kashmir. "In Valley teenagers are being killed and booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) for throwing stones, while in Jammu hardcore criminals are getting political patronization and are moving without any fear," Mehbooba alleged.
"Due to patronage of ruling parties leaders, the National Conference led regime has already institutionalized land mafia and now criminals have indulged into new types of crimes which were earlier confined to other states only," she alleged and said, "It is really a matter of grave concern of that crime like kidnapping for ransom too has started in Jammu region."
She further alleged that there is also strong politicians-land grabbers' nexus for land grabbing. "Politicians, bureaucrats and big business houses are taking benefit of this nexus and are grabbing forest and state land illegally," she said.
On the recent police action against the Gujjars at Sidhra where they were evicted from the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) land, Mufti said that it is very strange that brutal action is taken against the poor people, while the politicians, bureaucrats and business men having close association with the politicians have been allowed to raise farm and palatial houses and encroach upon the forest land in Jammu.
Besides, she also condemned the brutal cane charge on students in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri and accused the university as well as state administration of suppressing the voice of students. She also demanded a high level inquiry into the incident.
