| Kashmir police to develop its own intelligence network following lack of support from various agencies | | |
Srinagar,Oct 18 Of late the men of the Kashmir police are in the line of fire.During the last 15 days about one dozen policemen were killed in the gun and grenade attacks launched by the militants at various places in the valley. Out of them more than eight policemen, who were wounded in the violence, had succumbed to their injuries in the hospitals. Most of the rebel attacks on the police were witnessed in Srinagar city. Alarmed by the rise of incidents of targeting policemen the police authorities have started developing their own intelligence network in the police stations across Kashmir.According to a senior police officer, the need for developing “our own intelligence network” has risen following lack of support from other intelligence agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir. The police officer told Kashmir Independent Press on Wednesday that “for carrying out result oriented investigations in the motive of militants targeting police officials we need specific intelligence inputs which have been missing. So we are on the job of developing our own intelligence network.” The police officers are of the view that militants, especially those belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad,were targeting policemen simply to demoralize our forces.”These officers referred to the situation that existed in Kashmir in 1989-1990 when police remained in the life of fire which ultimately had resulted in severe demoralization of the police..At that time poling had become almost defunct. The police officer said that militants had not relished the way all the police stations in the valley had become functional and in order to discourage “our men” on performing their duties in the police stations militants had started targeting them. The officer explained that militants know that attacks on the police in Srinagar city receives adequate coverage in the print media and on the electronic news channels and hence most of the attacks on the police, including the one at Budshah Chowk,in which seven policemen were killed recently, had been carried out in Srinagar city. According to the police, investigations have been started and various measures were being taken in hand not only to prevent such incidents from getting repeated but also to force the rebels to be on the defensive and on the run |
