Jawan killed, another wounded in militants’ ambush
Police rescues 2 abducted VDC members

Jammu, Oct 18
A Naib Subedar of army was killed and another jawan injured when militants ambushed a patrol party in Poonch district, late last night while police claimed to have rescued two Village Defence Committee members in mountainous Doda district, today.
Reports reaching here revealed that unidentified militants, believed to be four in number, ambushed an army patrol party near Line of Control at Chunga area of Poonch district late last night. The militants opened fire and lobbed hand grenades towards the patrol party leading to the on the spot death of a jawan and injury to another, official sources told News Agency of Kashmir.
They added that Naib-subedar Sohan Singh was killed on the spot, while another jawan, Puran Singh, was critically wounded in the ambush. The fire was returned by the troops but militants managed to escape from the spot taking cover of darkness, they said.
Meanwhile, police said that it has rescued two VDC members abducted by the militants in Gundana village of Doda district.
Giving details a senior police officer told News Agency of Kashmir that militants had forced their entry into the house of Ghulam Muhammad and Ghulam Hassan of Gundana village in the district and abducted them on gun point, about three days back. The duo was working as VDC members, he added.
“The police had launched a massive search operation in the area to rescue the VDC members as a result of which we managed to get the breakthrough early today”, he added.
Claiming that the duo was rescued from a militants’ hideout, the police officer said that the abductors, however, managed to escape from the spot.
Reports said that Hassan and Muhammad were among four VDC members abducted October 14. However, strong protests and the formation of a human chain by local Muslim women resulted in the release of the other two, Ram Lal and Shadi Lal.
The gesture was hailed as an unprecedented show of communal harmony in the Muslim majority district.
