| Natrang showcases 'Sarkari Daftar' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 20: Natrang's Sunday Theatre series today staged Laxmi Kant Vashnav's Hindi play 'Sarkari Daftar' (Government Office) under the direction of Balwant Thakur. In a hard hitting satire on work culture in government office they play was received with applause and repeated laughter as caricatures of government functionaries were presented... The play opens at a government office and the time is 12.30 pm. No one is inside the office and the filthy environment reflects that it has not been cleaned for months. There enters a senior division clerk, who, on finding nobody in the office, wants to relax for sometime as he as been very busy managing his personal enterprises since morning. He asks the peon to fetch him a glass of water. The peon refuses to run the errand saying that does not fall within the scope of his duties as he is there only to assist file movement and other related allied errands. The peon further opines that since nothing happens in this office it is his privilege to sit and relax. Here flares an altercation between the clerk and the peon. The clerk threatens to take stern disciplinary action against him while the peon retaliates with the threat of moving his union for a state wide strike. This fight is put to a halt at the entry of Mrs. Nayer yet another functionary who comes to office at 1 pm. She blames city traffic and the problems at her place for being late to office by three h ours everyday... Her pleas are supported by a young colleague of hers who finds it very difficult even making it to the office by 2 pm. He finds no motivation in his present assignment as there is hardly any extra income in comparison to his previous postings where he used to earn five times more than his actual salary. Fed-up with all this, both leave for the canteen to entertain each other. At 3 pm the Head of the Department enters, finding nobody in the office he gets furious and starts scolding the peon. The peon bounces back and questions his routine arrival to the office at 3 pm. This upsets the big boss and he decides to skip the office for a film show to be accompanied by his new girl-friend. But before leaving the office for the film show he instructs his attendant that while responding to the queries about his whereabouts from the secretariat, he should say that the boss is on a field tour. While portraying the daily routine of employees in a government office, a common man is shown visiting the office repeatedly for his work. The tragedy of this common man is that he has been coming to this office since last one year but could never make it to the concerned official who is supposed to redress his grievances. Mohit Sharma effectively played the Big Boss while Rohit Verma beautifully portrayed the caricature of a Clerk. Rajani Bhatti was in her best while playing as Mrs. Nayer. Ishfaq Anwar as peon created good histrionics. Balwinder Singh as Gupta and Karan Malhotra as Verma played well. Gaurav Jamwal did the lights. Sumeet Sharma coordinated the show and Mohd Yaseen did the stage-management. The presentations were done by Vikram Sharma
