| Power wastage goes unchecked | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 20: With temperatures hovering over 44 degrees Celsius in Jammu region, local residents still are feeling the heat of erratic power cuts. However, the Power development department and other state government agencies are not shying away from wasting precious power and indulge in rampant misuse of scarcely available power. On an average power remains off for over 3-4 hours even in areas covered under the electronic metering zones but when it comes to chekcing/preventing misuse of electricity very few or minimal efforts have been made on the ground. There is no dearth of places where you cannot spot any government machinery indulging in wasteful expenditure of power resources. Starting from street lights which remain on even during day time is a very common example how our official machinery is prepared and trained to handle crisis situations. The picture attached with the story clearly show almost all the street lights fitted over flyover, the main arterial road connecting different parts of the city, are kept on even during day time by the concerned authorities. When this picture was clicked on Saturday afternoon at no point any repair or maintenance work of the street lights was going on which would have necessitated keeping the lights on for routine checking. The other example is of state government owned or run buildings. No where in these buildings due care has been taken to prevent misuse of power as fans, tube lights and bulbs remain on even after the offices are closed. Remarkably very few state government run offices have adhered to the circular issued by the state government to bring down the power bills by switching over to use of CFL's in work places to cut down the energy wastage. Official sources in the PDD revealed that in the coming days the state government is going to face tough times to arrange required energy units as the gap between the demand and supply is peaking and in the absence of any commitment from the union government whether they would release power reform grant any further to tide over the transmission and distribution losses it would be difficult for the PDD to lit up the houses across the state
