Doctors should endeavour their best to retain status of nobleness of profession: Azadvv
‘Sophisticated dental care is most important component of health sector’

Srinagar, October 18
“Since inception of civilization, profession of doctors has assumed the status of nobleness and it is necessary for them to serve the humanity with same spirit without caring for commercial interests so that they retain the same status in the society”, said Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad while addressing faculty members, doctors, students, staff of the Government Dental College Srinagar and prominent citizens after inaugurating IVth block of the college here this evening.
The IVth block of the college which was inaugurated by Chief Minister today has been completed at a cost of Rs. 2.25 crore. The entire dental college complex presently under construction involves a total cost of Rs. 19.48 crore out of which Rs. 13 crore have been spent so far. The work on Vth and VIth blocks of the complex is under execution at an estimated cost of Rs. 4.55 crore which would be completed by August next year by resorting to double-shift system of work.
Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for R&B Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak, Chairman State Social Welfare Board Mr. G. M. Saroori, MLC Mr. G. R. Kar, Principal Secretary Health and Medical Education Mr. Anil Goswami, Principals of Government Dental Colleges of Srinagar and Jammu and Government Medical College Srinagar were among those present on the occasion.
Mr. Azad said that doctors should serve the humanity with utmost zeal and dedication even by forgetting their personal interests. He called upon the budding dentists to come up to the high expectations of their noble profession with a single-minded approach to serve the needy.
Referring to the progress of dental sciences, Mr. Azad said that it has attained most significant place in health sector and there is need to bring greater excellence in management of dental ailments by keeping pace with the latest technology and treatment methodology.
Chief Minister said that he is vigorously pursuing the matter with the Dental Council of India for seeking permission to start post-graduate classes in Government Dental College Srinagar. He said state now has two dental colleges one each in Kashmir and Jammu divisions. He said in order to ensure job avenues for BDS, 366 posts have been referred to Planning Department for clearance. He said, he strongly feels that dental surgeons should be made available right up to the block level for the benefit of the people, adding that this will generate further employment avenues to our BDS trained youth.
Mr. Azad said that land has been identified for construction of girls and boys hostels as well as staff quarters of the college and added that work on construction of these would start soon. He also issued instructions for making a provision of recreation hall and library in the upcoming Vth and VIth blocks of the dental college.
Chief Minister also went round various sections of the newly constructed block of the college and inspected the facilities made available for better patient care.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma said that off late dental sciences have attained a place of prominence in the overall health care system and greater number of youth are coming forward to pursue BDS courses. He appreciated the quality construction of the block of the dental college and said that the remaining two blocks should also be completed within a fixed time frame under double-shift system.
Describing the profession of doctors as most noble, Mr. Sharma called upon medicos and para-medics to work still hard and serve the humanity with utmost dedication.
Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak said that keeping in view the limited working season in Kashmir valley and other hilly areas of the state, large number of works are being completed under double and triple-shift system. He said that the remaining two blocks of the dental college will be completed by August next year under double-shift. He said that utmost attention is being paid on quality parameters of all projects.
Principal of the college Dr. Riyaz Farooq in his welcome address dwelt on the dental care facilities available in the institution and its future plan of action.
Mementos were also presented on the occasion to Chief Minister, Health and Medical Education Minister, R&B Minister, Chairman Social Welfare Board and Mr. Kar besides functionaries of JKPCC associated with the construction of the complex.

Srinagar, October 18, 2006 (INFO) – Paying rich tributes to former Minister of State for Education Dr. Ghulam Nabi Lone on his first anniversary at Nowgam Jageer today, the senior Vice President of Congress Mr. Abdul Gani Vakil said that until the assassinates of Dr. Lone are identified and booked under law, the government would not rest. He said today we reiterate our commitment to leave no stone unturned to book the culprits responsible for killing of Dr. Lone, a high standard social and political representative of people who lived and died for the cause of people. Mr. Vakil said that Dr. Lone’s popularity among people was known to everyone and he will always survive in their hearts.
Mr. Vakil referring to the efforts initiated by Centre and State Governments for creating lasting peace in the state and settling all problems faced by the people, said dialogue at table is only purposeful and befitting medium to work out commonly agreed strategy in this direction. It is not the task of one individual or party to strive for finding out way to solve the issues but consensus of all political parties in a unison approach is must to be evolved”, he said.
Mr. Vakil said that instead of trying to draw political mileage and cultivate partisan approach for luring vote bank, all people friendly and since political parties and individuals have to work jointly to address the problem for the good of people and the state. This, he said, would be the best tribute to the slain leader Dr. Lone who fell prey to the violence and extremist activities.
Mr. Vakil said that state has witnessed much bloodshed and nothing has been achieved through violence anywhere in the world adding that all groups and parties having people’s interests dearer to everything should join dialogue instrument set in place by UPA government providing platform for everyone to put forth his views and strive for peace and prosperity of the state.
Speaking on the occasion Minister for Medical Education and Health Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma highlighted the qualities, administrative abilities and people’s-friendly temperament of Dr. Lone and said that Dr. Lone has laid lasting imprints of his devotion towards public good and administrative qualities in the field of politics and government.
On the occasion ex-Minister Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir, MLA Sarfaraz Khan, MLA son of late Lone Mr. Shoaib Lone and State President of Sewa Dal Mr. Balvinder Sambyal in their speeches paid rich tributes to Dr. Lone and spelled out his qualities of a high standard social and political worker who worked for the cause of general masses throughout his life.



Psychosocial care workshop for quake survivors
Srinagar, October 18 (INFO) – Director Health Services Kashmir Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad has stressed the need for development of mental health facilities at the grass root level.
He was addressing a review workshop on psychosocial care for survivors of Kashmir earthquake here today.
The workshop was organized by the Health department in collaboration with the department of PSW NIMHANS, Bangalore and Care India.
Director/Vice Chancellor NIMHANS, Bangalore Dr. D. Nagraja, Director Emergencies of Care India Mr. Balaji and Professor department of Psychiatric social work Dr. K. Sekar attended the workshop.
Mr. Muzaffar also made a presentation on the activities of Health department in the earthquake hit areas of Uri and Tangdhar. He said that a need was felt to have a better co-ordination between various agencies operating in such post disaster conditions to render better medical and psychosocial relief to the people.
Other speakers who spoke on the occasion include Dr. K. Sekar of NIMHANS, Bangalore, Ms.Rosaline of MSF, Srinagar Mr. Arjumand of AAI, Srinagar, Mr. Abdaash Gayawar of CEE Srinagar, Mr. Feroz of Coxa and Director School Education Kashmir Mr. Rafi Ahmad.
Throwing light over the background of the workshop Dr. K. Sekar said that there is a need to facilitate an informed debate, review issues like what has been accomplished, what the gaps are and what is the future direction of psychosocial care for earthquake survivors. The objectives of the workshop are including understand the psychosocial needs of the survivors of earthquake disaster, the process of empowerment in imparting psychosocial care and identification of future areas of work of psychosocial care.
The NIMHANS, Bangalore the premier mental health institute has been identified as a Nodal Agency in providing services and organizing effective, efficient and coordinated Psychosocial care to the survivors of the disasters in collaboration the social organizations who have been working in the area. We take this opportunity to bring together the professionals, institutions social organizations and volunteers to review, reflect, share and identify ways and means of rebuilding and reconciling the quality of life of the survivors of Kashmir earthquake disaster, he added.
This workshop is organized with financial support from CARE India and active support from other Governmental Departments of Health, Education and Social Welfare which have been working in the earthquake affected areas in Uri and Tangdhar regions of Kashmir. The workshop is organized to coincide with the completion of one year of psychosocial care interventions. The various activities planned for reflection in the workshop are compilation of organizational experience for background document, oral presentation and discussions and poster presentation.
Officers from education social welfare and representatives of various of NGOs participated.
