| Mendhar villages reeling under water shortage | | Local MLA shifts blame on PDD; PHE needs time | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 23: Despite the tall claims of the state government of providing regular water facility to every nook and corner of the state, particularly in hilly areas, the villages in the border district of Poonch are reeling under severe water scarcity. Courtesy: the apathetic attitude of PHE department. Gullothia village in tehsil Mendhar of district Poonch is a glaring example of government apathy, where state government has failed to provide water even for drinking purpose, left alone water for other day to day purpose. There are many areas where villagers are forced to use water for drinking purposes from natural sources like wells, ponds, springs, rain water. And when the temperature has gone all time high, these sources are also drying up fast and PHE department instead of providing water facility has left them high and dry. "We have been facing water scarcity for the last 20 years and we are totally dependent on natural spring but these days spring is dried up and we have to walk miles to fetch water, " rued a local. It is pertinent to mention here that villagers are forced to store rain water and use it for drinking and washing purposes. Earlier, the villagers had submitted their demands to the PHE department who assured them that had a scheme for water supply had been drafted and up to March 31, 2010 the water would be supplied to the said village area but so far nothing concrete has been done in this regard. Chief Engineer PHE, Daleep Bakshi said that such schemes need time and lot of funds for execution and assured that this project would be taken on preference. Meanwhile, when contacted, MLA Mendhar Rafiq Khan, he shifted blame on PDD department saying that he was also concerned about the problems, but can't do anything until and unless PDD Department extends cooperation in this regard.
