| Family, friends bid tearful adieu to Col Sood | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, June 24: Col Neeraj Sood, who was Tuesday night killed in an encounter with militants in Kashmir, cremated with full military honours here on Thursday. His body was flown in from Srinagar on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, a squad of 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) headed by Colonel Sood conducted a search operation in the Kupwara region.During the ensuing gun battle, Colonel Sood sustained a gunshot wound on his head and succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Appreciating Col Sood's performance, Lt Col KT Parnaik, who was present at the cremation, said he would be remembered for his courage, dedication, honesty and integrity. "Neeraj Sood upheld all those customs and ethos of the regiment and he will be remembered for his bravado and courage; for his courage, dedication, honesty and integrity that he has showed throughout his career," added Parnaik."As an officer, he was very good leader and he led from the front," he said.Senior officers placed wreaths at Col Sood's body.A keen sportsman, Col Sood had extensive experience in counter-insurgency (CI) operations and had been an instructor at the army's prestigious CI and Jungle Warfare School. |
