| Council staff `surrenders', striker deferred | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 24: After 15-day long struggle to get their demands accepted in the hands of government, the staff of the autonomous sports body of State Sports Council once again `surrendered' before the adamant Minister for Sports, R S Chib deferring their ongoing strike. Earlier, in March last, the Council employees had called off their strike in similar fashions on getting verbal assurance from the Secretary J&K State Sports Council, S A Laharwal, who had assured favourable action in a week's time with regard to two main demands of implementation of 6th Pay Commission recommendations and regularization of daily wagers. Surprisingly, the way the Council staff has given up it has given a negative impression to the entire sports fraternity, who, in fact, suffered a lot during the fortnight-long standstill due to the strike. It has been learnt reliably that the Minister for Sports, R S Chib hardly listened to the representatives of the striking employees despite their repeated attempts at to meet him at Srinagar. He (Minister) simply asked the employees to first call off the strike then sit with him to discuss the issues. However, the members of the coordination committee, which spearheaded the agitation, today came to know that there was a pre condition for employees to call off the strike before the file is moved to the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for action approval regarding Pay Commission. "Aware of the Minister's adamant attitude and unwillingness to give sufficient time for talks, the coordination committee today decided to defer the strike to facilitate the acceptance of demands by president of the Council, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah," member coordination committee told SAN.At Jammu Secretary Technical Education and Sports, BA Runyal attended a deputation of the striking employees and asked them to call off the strike to give government time to look into their demands. The deputation was comprised of Iqbal Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Anil Wadera and Gopal Dass.Meanwhile, in a handout issued by the J&K State Sports Council Employees Union said, "Since Minister desired that employees should call off the strike immediately so that the process of early implementation of Pay Commission is speedily settled, the striking employees in a joint meeting decided unanimously to defer the strike with immediate effect."
