| Aspirants outnumber available seats in Degree colleges | | Admissions to be merit based, claim authorities | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 24: Apprehension, anxiety, aspiration, expectation, exhilaration-some of the emotions felt by thousands of freshers while filling application forms in various colleges of the city with commencement of admission process for different courses in first year of three years degree programme since Tuesday. About 22,000 students who have qualified higher secondary exam through Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE), besides some of them from Central Board of School Education (CBSE) will compete for nearly 14,000 seats in BA/B.Sc/B.Com courses in 24 degree colleges in Jammu division. As per the notification issued by the education department, the application forms would be available from June 23 to June 26, while the first merit list will be issued on June 30. The department has claimed that it has made all arrangements to make the entire process of admission and selection process "hassle free." Admissions would be merit based and most colleges bring out at least three admission lists (one after the other) or till the seats in a particular course are filled up. "We have heard that college life is different from school and it is a stage where students need to be very cautious in opting subject combination. We have obtained less than 65 per cent marks in higher secondary exam and it would be difficult for us to get admission in the subject combination of our own choices," said Akriti Gupta and Seema Sharma, two admission seekers while filling application forms at Government College for Women, Parade. They said that they would also submit application forms in Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar so that they can easily get admission in the subject combination of their own choices. Another admission seeker, Rakesh Sharma at GGM Science College said, "As the selection will be based on merit, there will be tough competition in non-medical stream. I have certain apprehensions whether I would see my name in the selection list." Talking to the Early Times, principal Sham Lal Gupta, Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College said, "We were mentally prepared in view of heavy rush of admission seekers on the first day of admission process. On the first day, 1060 applications forms were sold by the college authorities. We had established five sale counters inside the college to cope up the heavy rush of the students. We had ensured proper drinking water facility for admission seekers and their parents keeping in view hot conditions." He disclosed that the college has constituted "counseling cum grievance cell" comprising four senior faculty members of the college to guide student and resolve their problems, if any, during the admission process. He however, said that though the Government has established new college in various parts of the Jammu region yet the admission seekers prefer to get admission in city colleges, which adds more pressure on these colleges. "Newly constructed have better labs, reading, library but students are giving preference to get admission in city based colleges," he maintained.
