| State gets Rs.34 Cr under ICDS | | | JAMMU, October 19,2006. During the current financial year(till July), Centre has released an amount of Rs. 2155 crore to various States and Union Territories under Integrated Child Development Service Scheme(ICDS). Out of this Jammu and Kashmir state has been released an amount of Rs.34.18 crore. The Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) Scheme is the world’s largest Programme aimed at enhancing the health, nutrition and learning opportunities of infants, young children(0 to 6 years) and their mothers. The Scheme provides an integrated approach for converging basic services through community-based honorary workers viz Anganwadi Workers and Helpers. It is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented through the State Governments with 100 per cent financial assistance from the central Government for all inputs other than supplementary nutrition which the states were to provide from their own resources. However, from the last financial year, the Government of India has decided to provide Central assistance to States for supplementary nutrition also to the extent of 50% of the actual expenditure incurred by States or 50% of the cost norms, whichever is less. Presently under this scheme 546.31 lakh persons(452.88 lakh children and 93.2 lakh pregnant and lactating mothers) are being provided nutritious food through a network of 7.45 lakh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers. In J&K State 1,21,325 Children(6 months to 6 years) and 69,858 pregnant and Lactating Mothers were getting benefits under this scheme. |
