| Festivity comes to standstill following showers | | | Jammu,October 19 : Diwali revelry came to a standstill on Thursday evening as heavy showers coupled with lightening windstorm lashed winter capital throwing normal life out of gear. Most of the shopkeepers who had displayed diwali gift hampers outside their shops, on footpaths and were expecting heavy rush of people on Dhanteras went in to tizzy to save their goods. The worst sufferers were cracker sellers in Parade ground and Gandhi Nagar area, small businessmen selling pooja material on street corners, fruit vendors as heavy showers and windstorm destroyed their goods. Traffic snarls greeted most of the motorists on busy city roads across the important city landmarks in old city and areas across Tawi bridge soon after downpour. Power went off in almost all the areas in walled city areas and across Trans Tawi area immediately after the dust storm. The power development department officials received enormous calls in control rooms from every locality as reports of snapping of power lines and telephone lines kept pouring in.A shopkeeper in Gole Market area who had displayed diwali gift hampers and pooja material under a tent said he was expecting more customers in the evening but heavy winds and rainfall played a spoilsport.Another shopkeeper inthe area quipped," mausam bhi thanda ho gaya aur dhanda bhi thanda ho gaya". Traffic police personnel had a tough time while regulating traffic in gole market area, Vikram chowk,Kacchi Chowni,Jewel Chowk,Satwari and Parade ground area. |
