| VHP opposes 'commission of inquiry' in Shopian killing | | 'It is a planned conspiracy to defame security forces in Valley which have been fighting proxy war on two fronts' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 28: The state unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has opposed the Chief Minister's decision of setting up of a 'commission of inquiry' headed by Justice Bashir-u-Din (retd), chairperson, J&K State Human Rights Commission, to conduct an inquiry into the Sopore incident. The organisation has stressed upon the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to come out with a white paper on the situation of the state since 1989. "The purpose of setting up such commission is nothing but to defame and demoralize the security forces which have been fighting proxy war on two fronts. The Chief Minister has lost his basis in the state and should step down on moral grounds," Dr Ramakant Dubey, VHP state president told reporters here. The VHP leader maintained that there is need to give more teeth to security forces to take overall control of the situation in valley. "Killings in the valley are sponsored at the behest of the mentors of the mischievous people and security forces are tied down on two fronts while fighting the proxy war against militants backed by Pakistan on one hand and anti-national elements within the region", he said. He however, added, "Setting up of an independent commission is certainly a welcome step to know the facts and do justice but reports of such commissions generally become a hot topic of discussions between various political groups and finally dumped in the cold storage and prove a big resources drain." He described the constitution of a 'commission of enquiry' headed by Justice Bashir-ud-Din, as a planned conspiracy to defame the security forces in the valley "which have been made target by the CM while buckling under the anti-nationalistic ideologue of the valleyites". Dubey also underlined the need of a five-point programme for immediate consideration. The VHP chief besides demanding the white paper on the situation and CM's ouster also questioned the authority of Omar Abdullah occupying the chairmanship of Unified Command. "No Chief Minister can hold such position where Governor, the representative of the Centre only has the authority to do so. The CM can only be the administrative head," said the VHP chief adding, "If CM fails to address these issues, the Governor, N N Vohra should exercise his powers while sending a report to Centre with a recommendation to relieve the present incumbency from the state's governance." Making a fervent appeal to the masses of Kashmir for maintaining peace, he also suggested for bringing the state immediately under the 'president's rule' saying the situation fast turning inimical to peace and tranquility here may lead to total chaos and breakdown soon if remedial; measures are not initiated.
