| Controversial politicians rule the roost! | | Jaya Jaitly likely to be Rajya Sabha member | |
NEW DELHI, OCT. 20: Controversial George Fernandes is keen on the rise of his controversial companion, Jaya Jaitly. Inb plain language, it is a deal that has already been sealed. Barring the unexpected, former Samata Party chief, Jaya Jaitly, will become a lawmaker soon. Jaitly's name is currently making the rounds as replacement for hotelier Lalit Suri, who died of cardiac arrest in London last week, as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. Jaya Jaitly may contest as an independent candidate, supported by UP's ruling Samajwadi Party as and when the Election Commission notifies the by-election to fill the vacancy in the House of Elders. The deal was reached between the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is also the Samajwadi Party president, and former Defence Minister, George Fernandes. In lieu, Fernandes has already announced his decision to campaign for the Samajwadi Party during the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, although his Janata Dal (United) would be contesting the elections in association with some regional parties. Incidentally, both Fernandes and Jaya Jaitly have been charge sheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for taking Rs 20 million payoff in the controversial Israeli Barak missile deal signed in 1999 while Fernandes was the Defence Minister. George Fernandes has moved closer to Mulayam Yadav after he was ousted as the Janata Dal (United) president earlier this month with Sharad Yadav replacing him. Chances of Fernandes eventually joining the Samajwadi Party are not being ruled out. Fernandes, founder president of the now defunct Samata Party, had appointed his close associate Jaya Jaitly as the party chief. She functioned from Fernandes' official residence and stepped down from the post and walked into political oblivion after she was caught on camera discussion a defence deal in a sting operation conducted by internet portal Tehelka in March 2000. Fernandes subsequently returned as the Samata Party president and retained the post when it merged with the Janata Dal (United) in late 2004. |
