early times report
JAMMU, July 14: In wake of the recent price hike of the pertroleum products, the transporters in the winter capital of the state are vying for increase in the passenger fares . Sources said the State Government too has agreed in principle to implement the hike in passenger fare.
However, the transporters are already charging exorbitantly even more than the fares prescribed by the Motor Vehicle Department.
Last time when fare were hiked the passenger fare with 10 percent surcharge and department had issued fare list.
According to this list inclusive fare including passenger tax for medium commercial vehicle are Rs 2.76 up to the distance of 3 kilometers, Rs 4.14 up to the distance of 5 km, Rs 5.25, 6.08 and 8.01 up to the distance of 10, 15, 20 Kilometres respectively and Rs 9.75 for above 20 Kilometres.
The operators charged Rs 3 for 3 kms, Rs 5 for 5 kilometres, and up to 10 kilometres are charging Rs10 in and around Jammu city.
The fare rates for 3-wheeler and auto rickshaws are Rs 11.28 up to the distance of 1 kilometer and 8.35 for subsequent kilometres. However, they too charge Rs 30 for even a shorter distance less than a kilometre.
Similar is the condition of difference between prescribed fares and those which were being charged by the bus operators on long routes.
But on ground actual fare being charged by the transporters is more than the prescribed fare by 50-100 percent.
It means that the even after the implementation of the hike of the passenger fare by 13 per cent is not going to affect the common man as the transporters are already charging high fares.
When contacted, Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said the department would see to it that every bus or minibus operator provides a proper ticket to the passengers, so that passengers would be saved of high-handedness of the operators.
The ticketing system would be implemented soon, added Akhoon.
He also said that any conductor found without ticket book would not be spared.
