SRTC suffers as pvt operators rule roost on lucrative routes | | | early times report JAMMU, July 14: There seem no chances of ailing State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) to bring it back into a profit generating unit as profitable routes in the state of Jammu and Kashmir are not allotted to the fleet of the SRTC allegedly at the behest of some influential politicians and their relatives having dozens of buses. On one hand, the State government is blaming employees of the SRTC for their failure to earn profits but on the other hand employees of the Corporation is holding responsible wrong policies of the state government for the same. It is pertinent to mention here that the intra-state routes on which the operational cost is high and profits are less are allotted to the SRTC but the most lucrative routes including Jammu-Kathua routes, Jammu-R S Pura, Jammu-Basholi, Jammu-Billawa r, and Jammu-Akhnoor has been totally surrendered over to the private operators under an informal secret pact, sources said. On these routes, passengers are in abundance, operational cost for the buses is low, this result in heavy profits to the operators. Interestingly, on these routes many politicians of Jammu have their stakes. Even some of them have earned crores of rupees from their fleet of buses on these routes and will continue to do so owing to absence of future vision of the State Government. Insiders of the Corporation, on the condition of anonymity, maintained that if these routes are allotted to them, surely the revenues of the SRTC will be increased and subsequently the losses will be reduced. At present, SRTC buses are operating on hilly routes and many inter state routes. It is notable to mention here that the SRTC employees, couple of months back observed a long strike in favour of their demands which included releasing of the pending salaries and implementation of recommendations of Sixth Pay Commission in toto. After the assurance of the State Government to concede their demands the employees call off their strike. But their demands are still unfulfilled. When contacted, Minister for CAPD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said that case in this regard was going on in the state High Court and rhis issue could only be solved after the court decision. He also said that the SRTC was also facing deficiency of the buses. |
