| | | Two missing girls still untraced, FIR registered against SHO EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 14: As tempers ran high in the remote Gulabgarh area of Paddar, Kishtwar, over the missing of two 12th class girl students, senior police and civil officers rushed there today to defuse the situation. The two girls -- Sapna, daughter of Nand Lal and Sangita, daughter of Janki Nath -- were Tuesday detained for half an hour or so at Atholi police station by cops after they were found sitting on the bank of Chenab river with their classmate Pradeep Kumar alias Ramu. After their release, the duo had gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Tension gripped Gulabgarh after this incident with people observing a bandh for the second consecutive day today. To cool down the tempers, Atholi police station SHO, Inspector Farooq Ahmad Wani was today attached to the district police lines, Kishtwar, and an FIR registered against him. To completely defuse the situation, third party, ie elderly locals, were also called in. Agitated over the missing of the girls, both 12th class students of Atholi higher secondary school, people had yesterday damaged Atholi police station and beaten up the SHO and naib-tehsildar Bal Krishan Badyal. A sentry, who had fired in the air to scare away the violent mob, was also beaten up. The SHO's official Maruti Gypsy was also broken by the people. As situation remained tense in the area, IGP, Dr Ashok Gupta and divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal rushed to Gulabgarh early this morning. Official sources said when Dr Gupta and Kotwal tried to pacify the demonstrators, who had already gathered there outside the police station, they started raising anti-police slogans. The situation, however, worsened when the protesters, joined by the school students, started pelting stones on the senior police and civil officers. The situation could have taken an ugly turn had the police resorted to firing on the demonstrators, the sources added. Sources said exercising maximum restraint, police later canecharged the demonstrators and chased them away. With the initiatives of Gupta and Kotwal, a meeting of villagers was later called. Deputy commissioner, Kishtwar, G R Bhagat, who was also present in the meeting, told The Early Times over phone from Gulabgarh that as demanded by the people, FIR was registered against the SHO. Asked if there was any trace of the missing girls, he said efforts were being made to find them out. A snifer dog squad had also been pressed into service, the deputy commissioner added. He said he himself was camping at Gulabgarh along with SP, Kishtwar, since yesterday. The situation was now under control and people were cooperating with police teams searching for the missing girls, he added. The district administration had also ordered a probe into the incident. Sources said the girls were suspected to have jumped into Chenab as their chappals were found on the bank of the river.
