Recruitment rally turns violent, 12 hurt in lathicharge

RAJOURI, July 14: Taking a cue from their counterparts in Kashmir valley, thousands of unemployed Rajouri youth invited by the army for recruitment rally today lodged a strong protest and resorted to stone pelting at Palma.
As per reports, 156 Territorial Army had invited more than 15,000 unemployed for physical test for 8 posts of Sepoy at Palma Camp Rajouri, however sources said that army could not control the mob and they turned violent following which recruitment rally ground turned battlefield between the troops and the aspirants.
When the troops restricted the protest, mob turned violent and they started heavy stone pelting on the army camp.
They also torched two army vehicles while damaged four others. The stone pelting started at about 9 am and continued till afternoon. However, when the youth entered camp, troops resorted to lathi-charge in which a dozen youth have received injuries among them 6 have been hospitalized in District Hospital Rajouri.
The job seekers alleged that army officials were allowing entry into the ground only to the blue eyed and influential candidates following which they started protest in front of the gate.
Meanwhile, Rajouri Police and administration rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors. District Development Commissioner when contacted said that he personally inspected the spot and talked to army authorities for postponing the recruitment rally following which it has been postponed. He said that he has suggested army to organize such rally at every tehsil headquarter.
Talking to media persons some of the unemployed youth said that they had been invited by the army for recruitment but they were lathicharged.
"We were protesting against the biased attitude of army but they started lathi charging us", Mohammad Tariq son of Mohammad Lateef resident of Budhal who was admitted in Rajouri hospital said. He added that there was no intention of the youth to create such situation and they had assembled to get jobs but army provoked them to resort to protest. "Army was allowing entry to the ground only to those candidates who were blue eyed and having any influence", Tariq said adding that the youth were demanding first come first criteria for entering the ground.
