Recent army march only fourth of its kind in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 14: Last week's flag march by the army in Srinagar happens to be only the fourth such march since 1947 in Kashmir. This explained a lot about the situation in Kashmir even when the media was gagged. After its arrival in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, the army came out on the streets to maintain peace in August 1953 when the then Prime Minister of J&K, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was dethroned and detained for conspiring with `enemies of the country'. Then, the Jammu Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment (JAKLI) marched on the roads of Srinagar city and elsewhere in the Valley. In December 1964, the army was again called out to help the civil administration in restoring peace and order. Following theft of the holy relic from Hazratbal shrine in December 1964, Kashmir fumed. The demonstrations continued for more than a month. However, the JAKLI did the job for India once again.According to a noted social worker, army marched for the third time in Srinagar following Operation Blue Star. On June 6, 1984, the Indian army stormed the Golden Temple at Amritsar to flush out the militants that had taken refuge inside the temple. The operation evoked severe reaction in Kashmir especially in Srinagar city. The army had to be called in to restore peace and order. Last week, the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah sought army help yet again. Army was seen marching in down town and uptown Srinagar. Omar had to do a lot of explaining. He was criticized for equating the current situation in Kashmir to the turmoil triggered by arrest of Sher-e-Kashmir in 1953 and theft of holy relic in 1964.
