Chemically treated vegetables, fruits in markets, authorities tightlipped | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July15: The State Government is doing nothing as far as checking of the quality of fruits and vegetables is concerned as there are frequent reports pouring in from various quarters that vegetable producers are using chemicals for their fast production artificially and putting the health of masses at risk while the health authorities are sleeping over the matter. According to experts, the chemicals used for this purpose are Oxygocin and Toxytocin besides others. These chemicals are being put into the vegetables through injections besides sprays are used on vegetables to grow or increase the size. As per sources, many vegetables coming in the markets are reared artificially with the help of the chemicals that directly affects human lives and genes. One of the renowned medical practitioners of the city, Dr Sanjeev Digra when contacted said that with eating this type of food material which has chemical inside it, risk of cancer, skin problems, number of digestive problems, and food poising if greater. With the onset of the rainy season, when there are chances of spread of various diseases because of unchecked vegetables, fruits and lack of proper sanitation in different parts of city, the Health wing of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) seems to be in deep slumber. Also on the other hand playing with the health of the Jammuties and that of the water bodies of the city, all the organic waste of the meat markets and meat shops within the municipal limits Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is being dumped into the water bodies of the city. In Jammu city alone there are dozens of meat markets and meat shops whose organic wastes to the tune of the quintals were produced per day is thrown in river Tawi and many others canals of the city. All this affects the lives of the people living along Tawi and canals. Concerned locals also alleged that there are also chances of spread of the diseases and urged the authorities to provide proper decompose facilities for the organic waste of the meat shops. One could see such shops at Satwari, Jewel Chowk, Vivekananda Chowk, and Gujjar Nagar and besides other areas of the city dumping their wastes in the water bodies making them virtually a dumping ground of the waste material. One shopkeeper on the condition of anonymity said ``we are forced to dump the waste material into the water bodies as we are not been provided any proper place to decompose the waste''. Ashok Kumar a local said a foul smell emanates from this waste material and at times it becomes difficult to even cross that short stretch of the distance. He further said that one could imagine the affect on the ecology with types of acts of the shopkeepers.
