Early Times Report
Jammu, July 15: For the fourth consecutive day, the people of Janipur, Roopnagar, Basant Nagar and adjoining areas are fighting over a bucket of water as authorities failed to restore water supplies in the area.
As per the reports, couple of days earlier due to wind-hailstorms main supply pipeline got burst resulting in no water supply. People are unable to attend their offices on time because every morning they had to arrange sufficient water for bathing, drinking etc. Even good old neighbors fight for a bucket of water now-a-days. If supplies remain affected, day is not far when it will become a law and order problem in the area.
Situation is turning from bad to worse for common people as private water suppliers have landed in golden season of the year. Small tanker costs Rs 400 to Rs 450 whereas big tanker charges Rs 800 to Rs 850. There is no tanker supply available from the concerned department.
"Influential people arrange water tanks from the concerned department and moneyed one buy it to meet their requirements, but people like us had to face and suffer as neither we can buy nor could arrange by influence," said Samir Kohli, a resident, adding people are left with no choice other than to come on roads to protest apathy of authorities at the helm of affairs.
"DI pipes were seriously damaged at three to four places near forest complex at Janipur, which are being repaired and are in final touch" said Chief Engineer, Public Health Engineering, Dalip Bakshi. He added that he himself is monitoring the task and by tonight water supplies will be resumed. Moreover, near about 60 water tankers are providing supplies to various places to meet the requirement of the people of area, he added. However, he said checking of water sellers is prerogative of municipal authorities.
