Leading state team-a dream cum true: Kamaljeet | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 15: Captaincy is something which every sportsperson would love to attain in his career, but for this Jammu boy- Kamaljeet, it was a dream cum true when named skipper of the state football team for the prestigious Santosh Trophy by the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA). Former Jammu and Kashmir Bank defender and now a key player of the Pune FC, the young footballer from J&K was more than happy to lead his home side in the hub of football-Kolkotta in West Bengal. "I had not expected the captainship when received an invitation from the Association to play for the state team. But, now, when the Association has bestowed faith in me, I have to work hard to prove myself on the ground," Kamaljeet told Sports & Allied News in an exclusive interview before he left for the venue. "Playing in a country's top tournament, that too in Kolkotta, would prove to be an opportunity for the state players to catch the attention of known football clubs of the country," he maintained. Kamaljeet, who begun his journey as professional player two years back when he joined Bombay FC after serving the J&K Bank team for four years, has ultimate aim of adorning the India Cap. "I'm following the foot prints of Arun Malhotra, who too had left the J&K Bank to excel at the national level. Since he has achieved the goal of playing for the country, I too want to excel on the same lines. I'm working hard and looking forward to attain the ultimate aim of making it to the Indian team," said Kamaljeet. When asked about the prospects of J&K team in the Santosh Trophy, he said, "Playing with top state players like Arun, Ishafaq and Wadoo, the state team has played up to quarterfinals on earlier occasions. This time, the boys have worked hard in the camp and are upbeat to take on the opponents. The presence of Wasim Farooq (East Bengal) and Vinay (Mohammadan Sporting) definety give strength to the team." On the prospects of football in J&K, Kamaljeet said, "The boys have started aiming higher by joining the clubs outside the state. Moreover, the helping hand extended by Arun Malhotra (Jammu) and Ishfaq Ahmed (Kashmir) proving to be a boon for the young players of the state." Kamaljeet, who led state under-19 team in 2000 at Jodhpur in Rajasthan received training in his initial stages from State Sports Council coach, Vishwamitra and has played for Young Hero Club.
