Pak opens heavy fire on Indian positions at Mendhar
7/16/2010 12:04:43 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 15: While army cordon was on in the upper Chhajla forests of Mendhar in Poonch to take on the lone surviving terrorist late tonight, Pak troops opened heavy volume of fire on the Line of Control (LoC),
targetting the forward posts close to Chhajla.
India retaliated. The heavy exchange of fire between the two sides was continuing at the time of going to the print after midnight. The firing was unprovoked and amounted to ceasefire violation, official sources said.
When contacted, SSP, Poonch, Manmohan Singh said the Pak troops opened the mouth of their guns, targetting Kirpan, Chhajla and Kranti forward army posts at about 10.30 pm.
Asked if there was any casualty on the Indian side, he said it was not yet confirmed.
Sources said the Kirpan, Chhajla and Kranti areas were close to Beri Rakh and upper Chhajla forests where two suspected Pakistani terrorists were shot dead by security forces today.
One militant was still holed up in the upper Chhajla forests. Intermittent exchange of fire between him and troops was on till late tonight.
Sources linked the Pak firing with the Chhajla encounter, saying it could be an attempt of the enemy troops to divert the attention of army so that the holed up terrorist got time to escape.
Though the troops guarding the forward posts returned the fire, multiple cordons were laid by other troops around Chhajla to hunt down the militant if he made a bid to flee, the sources added.
Sources said apart from using light machine guns, the Pak troops also fired shells some of which exploded in noman's land close to posts.
Some shells had exploded near the border villages but without causing any harm, the sources added.
Reinforcements had been rushed to the Kirpan, Chhajla and Kranti areas and ambushes laid on all the routes leading from the LoC to the forests to foil any infiltration bid by the Pak-based militants.
The SSP said Mendhar police had also alerted their border nakas.
