| Police the main target of militants: Sharma | | | Srinagar, October 22 Director General Police Gopal Sharma here on Saturdays said that Police has become the main target of militants operating in the state and killing of 29 constables in stepped up violence against police personnel during summer tourist season from April to July this year, according to him, is a grim reminder of the hard reality. Addressing a police commemoration day ceremony at Police Complex Zewan in the outskirts of Srinagar, Sharma said state police remained on the second line during counter militancy operations in the state for about a decade since the eruption of armed uprising way back in 1989, but is now leading from the front in the war against the militants. Disclosing that 72 police personnel have been killed during counter militancy operations, Sharma said eleven CRPF and twelve BSF personnel have also fell to the bullets of militants from September 1, 2005 to August 31, 2006 in the state. Elaborating Sharma further said nine police and a CRPF personnel were killed in April this year followed by eight policemen in May, seven police and a CRPF personnel in July and five police, one CRPF and two BSF personnel in August, five each police personnel in June and January. However, October last year, according to him, witnessed highest number of 16 deaths of security personnel including ten policemen, four BSF and two CRPF men. The day is being celebrated to remember 10 CRPF personnel who were killed while on deputation to ITBP during a Chinese attack at springs in Ladhak on this day in 1959 repulsed by them. Chief Minister Gh Nabi Azad, former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, DGP and others laid floral wreaths on the Samadhi of slain police personnel. A blood donation camp was also organized on the occasion.
