Police crackdown on protesters continues | Police deny `extortion' charges | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 21: Reminiscent of early 90s, nocturnal raids on residential houses are again in vogue. While the police says that the raids are conducted to arrest `stone pelters' and mischief mongers' to restore law and order, the parents of the arrested youth have accused the police of arresting innocent persons for ransom. According to sources, more than 1000 youth have been taken into custody from various parts of the Valley particularly from the summer capital. They have been booked under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) ranging from rioting to attempted murder. Some of them have been detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) as well. Long queues of aggrieved parents seeking release of their detained wards could be seen outside every police station in Kashmir. Some of them had brought their wards to the police station on their own to avoid raids on their houses. "I brought my son to the police station when the concerned SHO directed me to do so. He promised his immediate release. But ten days have passed and my son continues to be in custody", said a visibly shaken parent. A police officer preferring anonymity said: "Some boys wanted by the police had gone underground. "We have urged their parents to present them in the concerned police stations. It is for their own good", he said. Responding to MLA Langat, Engineer Rashid's allegations, he rejected them as malicious propaganda against the police. "Those boys who managed to get bail from the court have been released. The question of holding boys for ransom, therefore, does not arise. We have received no such complaints from anywhere", he said. Engineer Rashid had claimed proof about what he called `extortion' by the police from parents seeking release of their detained wards a few days ago. The on-going protests have given sleepless nights to the authorities. Different methods were employed to tame the protesters. At one point of time, the authorities even considered soft loans for them. According to sources, the authorities have directed the police to come down heavily on the protesters
