Training prog for commercial growers at RS Pura | Marigold cultivation highly lucrative, profitable for farmers: Sham | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 21: The Department of Floriculture, in collaboration with SUKAST, Jammu organized a training programme for commercial growers of Marigold of Jammu and Samba districts at R S Pura here today. Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma was the chief guest and Vice Chancellor SUKAST, Dr B Mishra was the guest of honour. Addressing the participants, the Ministers stressed the need for promoting cultivation of marigold in the Jammu province describing it as a highly lucrative and profitable venture. He said the farmers who have switched over to marigold cultivation have greatly improved their economic condition as it has great demand in the city of temples. He further convened that the department is providing all facilities to the farmers under Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). As regard the marketing of their produce, the Floriculture Department has provided the facility of cold storage in Jammu so that the flowers, if not sold on the same day, may remain fresh for next couple of days. The minister said that the department has also decided provide marketing space to farmers at Green Belt Park areas of Gandhinagar. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor SUKAST, Jammu called upon the farmers to grow Marigold to get good return in a short period of time and further stated that diversification in the agriculture sector was the need of the hour. Earlier, the president Jammu and Kashmir Flower Growers' Association putforth the demand of providing adequate marketing facilities to the flower growers in the State. Director Floriculture, in his welcome address, said that the objective of holding one day training programme was to make aware the progressive farmers about the centrally sponsored schemes launched in J&K state. He said since Jammu is known as city of temples, the demand of Marigold loose flowers is enormous. Previously 80 percent of the flowers were imported from other states of the country. During the last two years the 80 percent demand of Marigold flowers is being met locally. The farmers have been motivated to grow flowers for diversification in Agriculture sector. As it is more profitable then any other crop, with good return in a short period of time. The Jammu division has varied agro-climatic conditions and Marigold flowers both open pollinated as well as improved cultivars (hybrid) can be grown throughout the year. During the raining season, Marigold grown (Pusa Narangi & Pusa Basanti) fetches very high price during the festivals and marriage functions. The net return per kanal for Marigold growing ranges from Rs.10,000 to a maximum of Rs.40,000. The Hybrid varieties of Marigold grown are immune to low and high temperature and fetches very good return in the market. The Department of Floriculture have provided germ plasma of gladioli and Marigold to the women farmers of Katal Batal, Dhok Wazrian and some areas of Akhnoor for women empowerment in the floriculture sector which can provide employment to whole of the family. Later, the Minister visited the Sub District Hospital, R S Pura and inspected emergency and various other wards to take stock of the facilities being provided to the patients. He also inspected the progress of under construction quarters for doctors. On the occasion, the Minister interacted with the staff who apprised about the immediate requirements for smooth functioning of the hospital which included provision of 100 beds in the indoor block, purchase of ECG machine, construction of proper boundary wall and strengthening of peripheral health institutions.
