Prioritize completion of roads, bridges in far-off areas: Saroori asks officers
Reviews projects in Rajouri, Poonch

JAMMU, July 21: Minister for R&B, G.M. Saroori today had an officers meeting to review the status of various ongoing roads and bridges projects being executed in Poonch and Rajouri under PMGSY, R&B and JKPCC. Besides, the meeting deliberated upon multipronged strategies to further streamline the functioning of executing agencies for quality and timely completion of such projects in these twin border districts.
During the meeting, it was informed that presently out of the total 75 projects taken up in district Rajouri, 26 schemes costing Rs. 80 crore have been completed so far besides 30 schemes worth Rs. 146 crore are expected to be sanctioned soon which will provide connectivity to more than 46 habitations. Besides, out of total 20 bridges 5 have been completed while 15 bridges are expected to be completed by 2010-2011 in the district.
Similarly, in Poonch district out of the 37 projects taken up, 9 have been completed at a cost of Rs. 32.60 crore under phase 3-6 while the work on remaining schemes is in progress. Likewise, under phase 7, 38 projects worth Rs. 120 crore are expected to be approved soon. Besides, in Poonch district out of total 29 bridges 14 have been completed while 12 bridges are expected to be completed by 2010-2011 in the district.
Expressing concern over delay in execution of several ongoing projects due to forest clearance and other reasons, the Minister strictly instructed the concerned authorities to immediately look into the matter and resume the work as early as possible. He also asked them to ensure use of quality material in these vital works as such facilities have to survive for a very long period.
Referring to the problems of people of far-off and hilly pockets of the districts due to lack of bridges and adequate road connectivity, the Minister impressed upon the officers to prioritize completion of roads and bridges being executed in such areas so that the people do not feel alienated. He said that it is the endeavor of the coalition government to make every essential service easily accessible to the people of the state especially those living in rural and remote pockets.. In this regard, the government has initiated several steps which are quite visible from the achievements being registered at all levels. He said that efforts are being taken to ensure better road connectivity in three regions of the state.
Later, the Minister also inspected the construction work of additional accommodation at third floor of Civil Secretariat and asked the concerned engineers to complete the work well before the darbar move.
