Assistance to Gujjar and Bakarwals | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, July 21: Prolonged closure of shops due to protests and bandhs in Kashmir has seriously impacted day to day living of the nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal communities, residing in far flung remote areas, where the traditional grazing areas are, in the higher reaches and jungles of the valley. Their sustenance for ration provisions is restricted to the nearest tehsil or district headquarters; however, they were left disappointed, as all shops were closed. In an effort to address this vital issue, the Army along with Divisional Commissioner, Baramulla has checked out a strategy by which rations will be distributed to the nomadic community through the Public Distribution System. The Army has further promised its assistance to transport these rations to the hamlets of the Bakarwals. A similar exercise was done in Naugam Sector also. Further, as an ongoing process, food items to include Atta, Salt, rice, Oil, water and Medicines were distributed among 82 Gujjars in Lachipura on July 18, by the Army which would go a long way in meeting their basic needs and alleviating their problems. Gujjars and Bakarwals residing in Gulmarg, Uri and Naugam sectors have expressed their gratitude to the Army and the District Administration in providing assistance in their grave hour of need
