"Cops" reluctant to join duties in "disturbed" areas | | | SUMIT SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 21: As the valley continued to be tense in view of protests, curfew at some places and incidents of stone pelting, some police officers are said to have shown reluctance in joining their duties in the "disturbed" areas. These officers were transferred and postd there in the recent past. Some DSPs had either applied for leave, or switched off their cell phones to avoid receiving calls for emergency duties, or had expressed their helplessness to take the responsibility of field jobs, police sources said. Special Branch SSP Ghulam Hassan Bhat was hesitant to take charge of Baramulla district as the situation there was still on the boil over the alleged civilian killings. The railways SSP Mansoor Ahmad Untoo was to replace Sheikh Mehmood as SSP, Baramulla, but he cited "personal reasons" for not being able to assume charge of the office there. Mehmood had left for Chandigarh for the "treatment for heart ailments", the sources added. Baramulla too was tense after an incident of drowning of a boy in the district. Sources said police stations in hilly areas of Chenani, Latti and Pancheri were being headed by ASIs and SIs as some Inspectors had shown their disinterest in joining there. Police officers were also unwilling to join in south Kashmir because preacher Qazi Yasir had asked people to boycot policemen and stop selling them essential commodities, the sources added.
