Yatris charged double rates for return

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, July 21: Though the state government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has made elaborate arrangements for Yatris visiting the holy cave in deep Himalayas situated in south Kashmir district of Anantnag, from Lakhanpur to cave shrine this year, no such facilities are available to the pilgrims after return from Darshan. The pilgrims who returned after the pilgrimage of Swami Amarnath this year alleged that transporters charge more than double rate from Baltal and Pahalgam to Jammu. This has generated a lot of resentment among the pilgrims who term it a total cheating by the transporters. In comparision to Rs. 550 which is the scheduled rate from Jammu to Pahalgam or Jammu to Baltal per passenger, the transporters are charging Rs.1000 or more per passenger from Baltal to Jammu, said Bupesh Gupta a pilgrim from Delhi. Terming it a total cheating on part of a section of transporters in the state, Gupta accused the state authorities of watching this as mute spectators. The Yatris brought the matter n the notice of concerned authorities and minister of Transport, Qamar Ali Akhoon was also apprised of this but till date no action has been taken.
The Government should fix a proper rate from Jammu to Baltal and Jammu to Pahalgam and return, said Raman Kumar another pilgrim from Hissar (Haryana), to save the Yatris from cheating. " It is a serious matter that a pilgrim who pays Rs.500 as sumo fare from Jammu to Pahalgam is charged Rs. 1000 or more for return from there," he added. There is no reason in doubling the charges he said adding by charging exorbitant rates the Yatris feel cheated.
Moreover many pilgrims run short of money after traveling a long distance for days together and are not in a position to bear these exorbitant charges. The Government should look into the matter and take action against defaulters.
Deek Khurana another Yatri from New Delhi who paid Darshan at cave Shrine along with his three friends said that they were asked to pay 3500 for return from Baltal to Jammu and it was only after long arguments the sumo driver agreed to give Rs 500 rebate. This is a serious matter as while coming from Jammu to Baltal we paid only Rs 1500 to a sumo, he added. Khurana who was critical of authorities said this also gives a wrong impression about their working. Even one can not rule out nexus between administration and transporters, otherwise why the authorities hesitate in taking action against defaulters, he added. Meanwhile Shri Baba Amarnath & Shri Baba Buda Amarnath Yatri Niyas President Surinder Agarwal has asked Government to look into the matter at earliest and ensure that Yatris visiting J&K state for Darshan of Shri Amarnath Ji are not subjected to any harassment by the cheaters.
