Poonch people yearn for potable water | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 23: In these days of rainy season, when there is water every where, but there are also many areas in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that are without drinking water even in monsoon. This can be said for Panchayat Gullothia and its adjoining areas in Mendhar area of Poonch where seasonal springs and other nullahs are in floods because of incessant rain these days but even then dwellers of these villages are craving for potable water. PHE department is in deep slumber and has left the people on the mercy of God for this basic necessity of life even after their repeated appeals and representations to the concerned authorities. As most of the population of hilly area is completely dependent upon natural springs but due to the on going rainy season whatever water is available, it is largely for irrigational purposes and not to drink. Locals maintained that despite the claims of state government to provide proper water supply facility to every nook and corner of the state particularly in hilly area but the PHE department is not coming up to the expectations for the residents here. "We have been facing a lot of problems with this non availability of water from last 20 years and we are totally dependent upon natural spring but these days spring water is not potable to drink and in summers these springs are drying up now. We have to go far away villages to fetch water in both the conditions" maintained a local. It is pertinent to mention here that residents of that area are forced to store rain water in the pits and use it for drinking and washing purpose On the long pending demand of the locals, PHE department had drafted a scheme for water supply and assured the locals that up to March 31 last, the water would be supplied to the said village area but up to this day nothing concrete has been done in this regard. Chief Engineer PHE, Daleep Bakshi said "Now that the matter has come to my knowledge, I will direct the concerned officers to take stock of the situation to mitigate the sufferings of the commoners". When contacted, MLA Mendhar Rafiq Khan stated that "Yes we are also concerned about the problems, but we can't do any thing until and unless PDD Department extends cooperation in this regard". He further stated that for this concern they required transformer to supply water through pipes. |
