| HC withholds chief engineer's salary | | |

Jammu, July 23 : The High Court today withheld the salary of Chief Engineer M&RE Jammu. The order was issued by Justice JP Singh in a contempt petition filed by Noor Bibi and others. .
The court had directed the Chief Engineer to pay the petitioner, Noor Bibi and Ors a sum of Rs 4, 80, 000 as compensation for the death of Noor Mohd. The directions were not complied within the prescribed period.
The court after hearing the respondents on the contempt petition, four weeks time was given to the Chief Engineer to comply with the judgment failing which he had to appear in person. The Chief Engineer, however, did not appear and filed an application seeking exemption from personal appearance. His application was found without merit as no case for dispensing with personal appearance was found to have been made out. He was accordingly directed to appear on July 20, 2010.
However, the case was adjourned at the request of Additional Advocate General Gagan Basotra who had sought time to produce the Chief Engineer in the Court.
The Chief Engineer has not opted to appear nor has he reported compliance of the directions. The court held that the Chief Engineer was reluctant to implement the court directions.
After hearing Advocate Ajay Gandotra appearing for the Noor Bibi & others, the court directed Treasury Officer Jammu to withhold the salary bill of Chief Engineer PDD M&RE Jammu until next date. (JNF) |
