More cellphone woes in J&K after MHA directive
7/24/2010 12:18:01 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, July 23: : Following the Union Home Ministry directive to verify all mobile connections within a week, private cellular operators have shut off thousands of mobile connections in Jammu and Kashmir in the past two days.
Sources in the state's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said private service providers - Airtel, Aircel, Idea, Vodafone, Reliance and Tata Indicom - have disconnected phones of hundreds of subscribers who have more than one connection in their name.
"We have got a directive from DoT. We are in the process of disconnecting mobile phones of all those subscribers who have more than one connection in their name," a senior Airtel official told The Indian Express. "Right now, we are not sure how many connections would be snapped but the number definitely will be in thousands."
A week ago, the Union Home Ministry warned operators of "strict action" if they failed to verify all connections within seven days.
