Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 23: In absolute violation of the Wildlife Act, a musk deer was shot dead
by a police constable, a special police officer (SPO) and their accomplice in Pathra Doian forests of Poonch Wednesday night. While the accomplice was apprehended by forest officials, the two
cops were evading arrest. The accused were identified as cop Abdul Rashid, son of Ghani, SPO
Muzaffar Ahmad, son of Gulama, both residents of Loran, and Khadim Hussain, son of Shamasdin, of Shahpur Gontrian.
Posted at Haveli police station, Rashid and Muzaffar had gone underground. Khadim was, however, cooling his feet in a forest department lockup in Poonch, DFO, Poonch, Shamshair Ahmad said.
The incident took place in compartment No 94 of Haveli's Pathra Doian forests late Wednesday night, he added. Forest Range Officer for Haveli, Azmat Hussain Shah said after the the bullet was fired late Wednesday night, its sound echoed through the forest and alerted them.
He said on Thursday morning, he along with forest guards and other officials left for the Pathra Doian woods. "After traversing treacherous mountain routes and high passes, we reached there in the
afternoon" he added. He said while they were making searches in thick bushes, they came
across a dhok. "When we were getting close to the dhok, we sighted three persons inside," he added.
The range officer said before they could lay hands on them, the cops managed to flee while Khadim was overpowered and taken into custody. He said though the accused had consumed some of the meat, besides wasting few animal parts, the uncooked leg of a musk deer was recovered from there.
Khadim, who confessed to illegally killing the deer along with the two cops, was later brought to Haveli and put in a forest department lockup, he added. Shah said his .12 bore gun and the deer's leg were also seized and brought to the Haveli office of forest department. He said raids were being conducted to nab the two escaped cops. The matter would be taken up with SSP, Poonch, for their arrest, he
added, saying they carried their official rifles when the deer was shot dead.
Shah said the seizure of the meat had made their case very strong. "We are trying to find out the skin, bones and other parts of the animal to further strengthen the case," he added.
The range officer said all the accused had been booked under sections 8/18 and 50/51 of the Wildlife Act. On December 23 last, a fully grown leopard was found lying dead in Tragi forests of Koteranka in Rajouri. On March 1 last, a leopard was shot dead by some unknown persons in the remote Dedivan Nullah forests of Soti in Gandoh, Doda.
