Is gulf between coalition allies widening ? | Washing dirty linen will yield no good | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 23: There is complete lull in the coalition corridors after the shocking revelations and allegations of corruption indulged in by the ministers of both National Conference and Congress. Is this lull indicative of the 'expected' storm in coming days? No one knows. As for now, one thing is sure to decipher from the 'eerie silence' that the fresh 'political turmoil' has only widened the gap and gulf between the coalition partners. The developments, though on all 'unsubstantive' basis has also resulted in differences widening within the parties. The wheels of the coalition partners in J&K never moved with a cohesive force in the past ever since they entered into pact to form the new dispensation in J&K. A well 'greased' coordination has been missing ,rather elusive at all levels between the NC and Congress, even as both try to project a united face. But the recent developments that filled the newspaper columns has only augmented this gap and pushed apart whatever little and feeble strings of coordination existed between the two major allies. The allegations of corruption emerged suddenly from nowhere only to give shocks to the people at a time they were expecting a sound and well meaning 'performance' from the coalition, in the wake of sharp criticism it earned for (mis) handling the Kashmir crisis. From which source and quarter it came, it shook not only within the coalition but also entire government machinery. Notwithstanding the fact that the government immediately came out with orders of enquiry into brazen allegations, these have only maligned the image and credibility of the entire government itself, even though only few names from both the allies have been making rounds in the media columns. And all these revelations, unfortunately were followed by the reports about cabinet reshuffle , almost in a strategic manner which seemingly appeared somewhat planned. Be that it it may, but the most unfortunate fallout of all these developments, almost in row is certainly negative on more than on front. With no mechanism of reassuring coordination in terms of smooth relations and consistent rapport , the allies, particularly at the ministerial level have further driven distant from each other. Even within the parties the differences at certain levels have pushed up to an alarming, uneasy level, though outwardly everyone has chosen to remain 'reticent' . This holds true for both NC as well as Congress . The latter which is already beleaguered with the dissension and factionalism appears to be worst sufferer. The basic tenets of coalition dharma required to be followed in spirit is missing conspicuously. From an invisible quarter whoever is washing the dirty linen in public about the ministers indulging in corruption, the negative impact is only shaking the already loose wheels of coalition and further adding to an atmosphere of instability and uncertainty. Wrong messages have gone to entire administration and all corridors of power. The allegations, which as of now appear to be 'anonymous' have yet to be seen in following up with substantive proofs and the government measures. IF this state continues, the scenario is bound to impact the coalition relations and government functioning. Instead of resorting to steps on the basis of sending feelers and messages to concerned quarters, may be as a means of 'pressure tactics', the government needs to come out with measures of deterrence deep rooted in institutionalized mechanism, as washing dirty linens will only insulate those indulging in wrong.
