PDP requests PM to intervene to defuse situation in Kashmir
7/25/2010 10:39:30 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, July 25: Accusing the Centre and state government of failing to respond with compassion to the situation in Kashmir, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday urged the Prime Minister to intervene.
"Even as the present scenario in Kashmir looks extremely dark, it could still be turned around through positive and purposeful intervention," the party said in a statement issued after a meeting of its legislators and senior leaders chaired by PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. "The situation calls for immediate intervention at the level of the Prime Minister which could be perceived as dignified and a serious step in order to defuse the tension on ground," it said, cautioning that any further delay in reaching out to the people "could make retrieval that much more difficult." It alleged that governments at the centre and state had failed to respond with compassion to a highly painful situation. "The administration had been cautioned by no less a person than the prime minister himself during his June visit about its failures in addressing even the basic problems of the people," the PDP claimed and dubbed the state government's response to the current situation as "childish". "By its childish response to the current situation, the government has failed in all aspects of governance," he said. The PDP stressed on the need for sincere efforts on part of the government to create an atmosphere for resolution of Kashmir problem.
