Agri deptt to distribute 4160 qtls HYV seed

Udhampur July 25: To boost productivity per hectare agriculture area, the agriculture department has carved out a special plan for the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. This area specific approach of the agriculture department is the result of the resounding success the high yielding varieties of seeds have already proved in raising the productivity and quality of food grains and veggies.
Accordingly, the authorities have earmarked an outlay of Rs 35.69 lacs for agriculture sector in Udhampur district, which include Rs.18.63 lacs as revenue component against newly created planning cell and the remaining Rs.17.06 lacs as capital component in this year's fiscal.
As per statistics of the 72426 hectares of agricultural land under cultivation In Udhampur district, already 71180 has been brought under high yielding varieties of seeds
Micro-planning techniques along with macro components are being invariably applied to maximize the growth not only for bringing the gap between demand and supply but for assuring surplus quantities as stocks. For this, farmers are being apprised with the recent scientific methodologies and patterns of bee keeping. A sizeable number of 30 Bee-hives colonies and 500 bee appliances have been planned for distribution among the farmers during the current financial year. Similar, approach is being applied for Mushroom cultivation with a proposal to establish 16000 number of Mushroom trays and distribution of 8000 nos. of bottles of spawn. This, it is expected would surge Mushroom production to 535 quintals. The district has last year also created a record of sorts in Mushroom production last year by registering a total production of 561 quintals.
The success of Saffron cultivation in Udhampur is already a big breakthrough in agriculture sector. The Saffron of the region is in the great demand for its quality and texture. To further encourage the farmers for cultivation of this yellow gold, an amount of Rs.1.00 lacs to take up 10 demonstrations has been proposed in the current year plan. It is worth mentioning that last year, 10 demonstration plots of one marla each were taken up under Saffron cultivation at Panchari, Basantgarh , Kud area and trial proved out to be a grand success. During 2009-2010, an amount of Rs 67.06 lacs including Rs.50.00 lacs additionality was available as capital component, which was utilized in full. The amount utilized include Rs. 60.00 lacs for construction of Cold Storage. Target of Honey production was 75 qtls. against which 38 qtls. was achieved.
