| Jammu Newspapers Guild formed | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 25: Keeping the present day scenario to maintain the independence of the press and its freedom the Jammu Daily Newspapers Owners have decided to form a body which has been named as "Jammu Newspapers Guild".The adhoc body constituted by adopting the resolution which reads: 1. Prem Nath Sharma -(Glimpses of Future) - Patron, 2. Roop Lal Sharma - (The Shadow) - Chairman, 3. A.K. Sawhney - (Journey Line) - President, 4. Subash Mehra - (Jammu Jotting) - Vice President, 5. Munish Gupta - (Early Times) - Vice President, 6. Aseem Sawhney - Gen. Secy.
One of the main features of the Jammu Newspapers Guild would be to uphold the freedom and working of the press in J&K.
It was resolved by the Jammu Newspapers Guild that the expression of freedom of the press refers to the freedom of printing press as a medium of publication and of the products of such publications particularly the Newspapers. Freedom of the press today means absence of interference by the state with the press, except in so far as it is authorized by the constitution and by laws which are constitutionally valid. Freedom means absence of control, interference or restriction. We are cautions that certain sensitive situation comes where the role media is more responsible and self restrain necessary for the interest of the nation and the society. The Newspapers have shed and continued to shed more light on the public and business affairs of the nation than any other instrumentality of publicity. A free press stands as one of the great interpreters between the Govt. and the people. To allow it to fettered is to fetter ourselves, the resolution said. Freedom of the press in short forecloses the state form assuming Guardianship of public mind Authority is to be controlled by public opinion. "Not public opinion by authority". Let reason be opposed to reason and argument to argument and every good govt. will be safe. "Fear breeds repression…… repression breeds hate……. Hate menaces stable Govt…… The path of safety lies in opportunity to discuss supposed grievances and proposed remedies. Of course we know the freedom of press is extolled as one of the great bulwarks of liberty. It is often misunderstood ……. It does not mean that the press is free to ruin a reputation or to break a confidence or to pollute the course of Justice or do anything that is unlawful. The privilege is nor prior restrain or censorship or check by authority to be imposed.We know press freedom carries with it responsibility for its exercise and for the same our guild shall work to maintain the freedom of press and also responsibilities. Guidelines and regulations shall be formulated to associate with other Newspaper management and make the Guild more strong. The body shall highlight the problem of the Newspaper management and fearlessly highlight the truth without damaging or denting the secular image. Print media can play very vital role to establish peace and lead direction towards way out of solution.The "Jammu Newspapers Guild" is a pro-nationalist body and knows its responsibility to discharge sensitive functions. Jammu Newspapers Guild will hold a seminar on "Role of media for peace" with the civil Society very soon.
