Antony leads the nation in salute to Kargil martyrs | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, JULY 26: Defence Minister AK Antony led the nation today in paying tributes to Kargil martyrs on the 11th anniversary of the victory in Kargil war by Indian soldiers which is observed on this day - July 26 - every year as Vijay Diwas. Accompanied by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal PV Naik and Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt General PC Bhardwaj, the Minister reached Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate here to lay floral wreath at a solemn function held to commemorate the martyrdom embraced by valiant soldiers and officers of Armed Forces in the Kargil war to protect the Indian territory and uphold the pride and honour of the country. Eleven years ago in 1999 these soldiers about 500 of them had laid down their lives to drive out armed men who had intruded from across the borders and surreptitiously positioned themselves on several peaks in Kargil and Drass sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. A fierce battle followed and all the peaks and hideouts in the two sectors were declared free of intruders on July 26 and thus ever since the nation has been paying tributes to Kargil heroes every year on this day.
