Delhi's fears against Pak misusing US military aid not unfounded | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 26: If Delhi has been apprehensive about the increasing US military aid to Pakistan it is not without valid reasons. In fact the military might Islamabad is seen projecting all these years has been the result of military and non-military aid Pakistan has received from the US Government since 70's. And during the last over 30 years Afghanistan, in fact the fluctuating security scnario in the land of mountains, has been the main reason for the successive US Governments to despatch large quantities of sophisticated weapons besides fighter planes to Pakistan. First its was the Soviet invasion on Afghanistan that forced the American Government to send large quantities of sophisticated weapons to Islamabad for giving it to the Afghan Mujahideen who were engaged in fighting against the Soviet troops. After the pull out of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan in late 70’s these very weapons were used by the Pakistani agencies in training militants, who were sent to Kashmir in thousands. These very weapons were used by the Pakistani troops for pounding the Indian border posts and pickets besides the villages. The US weapons were fully utilised by the Pakistan troops during the Kargil conflict of 1999. That Pakistan trained militants, who had infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir since 1988 and who are still crossing into the India state, were equipped with heavy bags of weapons and ammunition is indicated by the following data. Between 1990 and 2010 the security forces have recovered about 35,000 assault rifles from the militants. As many as 15000 pistols and revolvers, 1500 UMGs, 2500 RPGs, 70,000 grenades and 15000 kgs of RDX were recovered from the militants during the last 20 years. Police sources say that while 75 per cent of these weapons and ammunition had been supplied to Pakistan by the US Government the remaining 25 per cent had the Pak and Chinese markings. It is in this context the Indian Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, has expressed concern over the scale of the scale of US military assistance to Pakistan. India's concern was conveyed to the US Security Advisor, James Jones, and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, by Antony when the two were in Delhi recently. Reports said that Antony described the scale of the US military aid disproportionate to the war of terror it was fighting. It indicates that Delhi is convinced that the scale of war launched by Islamabad against terrorists did not require as much military aid from the US as Pakistan has been receiving during the last several years. Hence Antony conveyed his fears to the US authorities about the possibility of Pakistan using these very weapons against India. According to these reports the US officials did not make any commitment as the US Government is convinced that in order to win its war against the Talibans and the Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and in some parts of Pakistan it was imperative for Washington to keep Islamabad in good humour which was possible with continued military and non-military aid to Pakistan. No doubt the US authorities have earlier assured Delhi that Pakistan has been told not to use these weapons against India but Delhi does not seem to have any faith in these assurances because in the past Islamabad ignored the US instructions when these very weapons and ammunition were given to those who were fight against India in Jammu and Kashmir.
