‘If Govt is a loser, separatists have not won’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 26: The government is seriously considering release of separatists to "restore order" in the strike torn valley. While it is an admission of the influence exercised by separatists in contemporary Kashmir, the separatists have no reasons to rejoice. The angry youth have dared to burn the effigy of no less a person than Hizbul Mujahideen chief, Salah-ud-Din for his statement on continuous strikes. They have also ridiculed Jama't-e-Islami leadership for similar reasons. If government is the loser, separatists have not won. Last week Syed Salah-ud-Din issued a statement wherein he opposed the on-going strikes. Same day the Jama't-e-Islami also issued a statement urging the `leaders' to keep peoples' problems in mind while giving strike calls. This was enough to trigger massive demonstrations against them. While Jama't-e-Islami preferred to remain silent, the Hizbul Mujahideen was forced to issue a clarification. A spokesperson of the outfit said Salah-ud-Din had not criticized the strikes. Have the separatist leadership become irrelevant in present day Kashmir? The leadership has passed on to the younger generation. Rightly or wrongly, they have been running the show after the authorities arrested Syed Ali Geelani. In fact, government by arresting Geelani paved way for the take over by the young leaders and they seem in no mood, at least for the time being to repeat the 2008 mistake. It maybe recalled Geelani was accused of `killing' the 2008 agitation. According to informed sources, a high level intelligence team from New Delhi visited Kashmir to take stock of the situation. They team, it is believed, suggested release of Geelani to diffuse the situation. Geelani has been accused of killing the 2008 agitation. He won severe criticism for that and had to do a lot of explaining. Now, stage seems all set for release of Geelani. But what will he do? Is he in a position to repeat the 2008 mistake? The answer comes from today's statement of Dukhtaran-e-Millat Chief, Aasiya Andrabi. She said: "The government and its agencies think they can sabotage the movement by releasing leaders. We respect our leaders and we will continue to respect them as long as they come on the streets to lead the on-going Quit Jammu Kashmir Movement. The leaders shall become irrelevant if they do otherwise." So this is a clear warning for Geelani and all others. His release, therefore, is likely to add momentum to the movement. Once out of prison, the otherwise firebrand leader will have to follow the `young leaders'.
