Pak spy ring in Army will be investigated: Mukherjee
10/23/2006 10:35:13 PM

NEW DELHI, OCT 23
A detailed investigation will be conducted to bust a Pakistani spy ring in the Indian Army, the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, announced in the capital on Monday. The announcement came amid louder noises in official and political circles against the presence in the Army of pro-Pakistan spies.
Just last week, the Delhi police nabed two men on charges of espionage and handing over secret documents to Pakistan's ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence). ISI is military spy arm of Pakistan. Even as Islamabad denied the allegation, Pranab Mukherjee made it clear: "It will be our exercise to unearth the network which they (ISI) have developed".
The Defence Minister also made it plain that since the other "kingpins who are involved with it, they are to be found". Hence, a detailed investigation "is necessary", Mukherjee said. Responding to questions by mediapersons, Mukherjee stated that the two captured Army personnel, if found guilty, could face a court martial.
India and Pakistan routinely accuse each other's mission staff of spying and expel them. In August, Islamabad expelled an Indian diplomat on charges of spying. India responded by throwing out a Pakistani diplomat. The latest spat came ahead of next month's peace talks, which are aimed at reviving a peace process that began in 2004 to resolve a range of disputes, including the territorial row over Jammu and Kashmir.
The peace process was put on hold after a string of bombs went off in Mumbai in July, killing 186 people. Police have blamed the attack on a Pakistan-based militant outfit backed by the ISI. Pakistan has denied the charge. Defence Minister said that the activities of Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, had increased in India.
"We are aware of the fact that ISI has increased its activities in the country and sometimes we do arrest the moles in various organisations," Mukherjee said while addressing a press conference after meeting Coast Guard commanders.
Referring to the recent arrest of an Army jawan at the Delhi airport with a pen-drive consisting sensitive Army information, Mukherjee said: "we will have to ensure that such type of incidents do not happen". Replying to a pointed query, the Defence Minister stated that investigations would be launched to determine the extent of infiltrations in various organisations.
