7/29/2010 11:24:01 PM

SIDDHARTH
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu,July 29: Before she bid goodbye to theatrical show-biz in Jammu a decade ago, Anju Jamwal had well established her supremacy as the undisputed crowning glory as numerous uno in state’s dramaturgy.
Having performed in some of the most challenging theatrical ventures in early 90s when resurrection on theatrical front of Jammu and Kashmir was taking shape and many strong contenders were in the reckoning to clinch top slot as performing artists, Anju’s niche in providing a meaningful and substantial idiom to the female participation in theatricals stood differently and hence roped her a distinction as a class apart.
Having three times best actress awards to her credit clinched by her in state drama competitions, Anju in an exclusive tête-à-tête with ET correspondent revealed about her leanings developing for the art despite her heavy occupancy with her academics and household chores also.
The excerpts follow:
ET:How art and culture caught your interest despite you being a serious academician having done M.Sc Zoology and later also M.Ed?
Anju: Any art form in extra curricular activity automatically gets attached to the person who has some leaning towards it. Sometimes it is inherited and sometime possessed. I possessed it for I being somewhat inclined towards the dramatics and hence got attached to it. Besides, I was an active participant in various cultural activities at school level that helped me undertake theatricals later.
ET: You achieved greater heights in shorter spell of your dramatics. How would you define that period and your achievements?
Anju: Since I possessed love for theatre, I got into it through couple of my friends who insisted me to enact in theater competition of the state. It was first major break for me on state level and I performed lead role in most challenging play of Jaywant Dalvi’s Mahasagar. It was my maiden entry and I clinched the Best Actress award, thanks to my Director Dr Sanjay Gupta and colleague Vikram Sharma whose persistent faith in me fetched me the coveted honor.
ET: Did success rode high on your mind and how did you tackle the stardom in 90s when numerous names in females were stronger contenders.
Anju: Success always remained in my heart as a growing baby whom I nurtured very cautiously. Immediately after Mahasagar’s success I accomplished double feat in consecutive years by clinching Best actress awards and later bid goodbye to theater to build my own career and family with whom I am today living happily. A rendezvous with success in Badal Sarkar’s Ant Nahin’s Best actress award put my acting graph on the top slot from where I could have grabbed many opportunities coming my way in television and film world, but I reined in my love to prefer for my family and job and I am contended to have done great justice to whatever I have done in my life as an artist as well as a proud daughter of my family.
ET: Besides theatre you are an approved artist of Radio and Doordarshan also. Are you still in touch or would like to spare some time after having satisfactorily achieved your goals.
Anju: Doordarshan J&K in late 80s and early 90s was just grooming for a space and I got my name listed as casual announcer with it, but with radio I was artist primary section and have rendered many programmes for it. Besides I underwent 4 years vocal music course at Prachin Kala Kender Chandigarh where I completed my M.Ed degree also. Since art and culture is still imbibed in my soul and heart as my love, a chance coming my way through my older colleagues with whom I had worked in my hay days would be appreciating one as recently I was honoured by Mr Vikram Sharma to judge a theatre festival conducted by him which was a very exciting experience.
Anju Jamwal, presently a senior teacher in Kendriya Vidalaya Bantalab, and also the senior most stage artist of the state who has bagged great awards and honours through her stupendous artistry feels about new idiom theater taking shape in the state though a couple of ace experts as the actual need of the changing time. She dismisses the idea of orthodox dramaturgy finding any relevance in hi-tech environments and welcomes experiments undertaken by few to keep theatre living in state.
