Army provides timely relief to flood victims | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Aug 11:Heart rendering scenes were witnessed in Wakha village in Kargil district after devastating flash floods struck havoc in this village. The picturesque village woke up on August 9 to one of the worst tragedies in the past several years as the normal tranquil atmosphere was replaced by chaos and confusion. People were frantically running around searching for their beloved ones. The most affected were the livestock. Communication in the village was totally disrupted and villagers were finding it very difficult reaching the civil administration.
However, ‘Forever in Operations’ Division of the Army was prepared for the eventuality and immediately swung into action.
An infantry column was pressed in to carry out rescue operations. They went about in a professional manner cordoning the area and coordinating the search and rescue operations to relocate persons and belongings lost during the tragedy. Timely action on part of the formation averted the inevitable human tragedy though loss to the houses and shops was severe. Various shops and houses had simply washed away. The Division ensured that help is provided to the villagers immediately. The affected were provided warm clothing and blankets along with ration and other items.
The villagers were very grateful in spite the fact that they were just recovering from the shock. As they try and rehabilitate themselves they are all praises of the army for extending timely assistance and preventing a major disaster.
