Is Jammu University under Varun becoming hub of anti-India activities? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: Things in the University of Jammu have assumed alarming proportions. The anti-India and pro-Kashmiri separatist elements in the University of Jammu, which not so-long-ago was considered by the people of Jammu as one of the premier schools of learning in the state, are using this temple of learning not only for promoting the cause of the Kashmiri separatists and terrorists but also for creating a dangerous regional and religious divide in the state for ulterior purposes. Reliable sources in the university have told this scribe on the condition of anonymity that the "pro-Pakistan and pro-independence academics like Rekha Choudhary of the political science department and the Jammu-based journalists are responsible for vitiating the atmosphere in the University of Jammu" and that the "authorities in the University, including the Vice-Chancellor, are watching these anti-national activities as mute spectators." These sources have, in addition, told this scribe that "there are "a couple of pro-Amitabh Mattoo lackeys and stooges in the Jammu University, including the one who is a permanent employee of the University and who is also working for a newspaper on regular basis for years, violating the service rules, who are working overtime to ensure the appointment of Amitabh Mattoo as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu so that he is able to implement his anti-India agenda in Jammu province." Very importantly, these sources have also revealed that "there is a person, who was very close to Amitabh Mattoo whom he promoted out-of-turn ignoring the seniority of many others, is misguiding the present Vice-Chancellor and the result is that the present Vice-Chancellor is not taking any action against those writing anti-India and pro-fundamentalist articles in the Kashmir-based daily like The Rising Kashmir." In this regard, these sources referred to the article "Winning hearts and minds: Agonized Kashmiris" written by Rekha Choudhary, herself a victim of fundamentalism and migrant from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. The controversial article appeared in the August 10 edition of Kashmir based paper. The article, among other things, reads like this: "there are many other measures which the Government of India can take up on its own, without needing any nudge from the separatists. If the unilateral process on its part is sincerely pursued, there is no issue as to why a congenial environment would not be created for pursuing the process of finding resolution to the "unique problem'. With every political measure taken up by the Government in Delhi, the level of anger in Kashmir will come down. It is important at this moment for New Delhi to understand the level of discontent, anger, disillusionment and mistrust in Kashmir. Winning 'hearts and minds' of people (read Kashmiri Muslims) is not very easy. It needs to create a minimum level of trust. But even for that, it will have to make extra efforts" (read meet the separatist and communal urges of the Kashmiri Muslim leadership. There was nothing whatsoever in this article about the alienation, anger, frustration and neglect of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, as also about their political aspirations, and there was everything in this political essay that pandered to the Kashmiris' separatist and communal urges. "These are the persons who are vitiating the atmosphere on the campus of Jammu University" and "these are the persons who need to be tackled forth with in order to check the anti-India activities in the University of Jammu," these sources emphatically said. Not just this, these sources also attribute the anti-India activities on the campus which were undertaken on Tuesday by "students from the Jawaharlal Nehru University" and other "outsiders" to those in the Jammu University who have been "writing anti-India and pro-independence essays." It is good that the politically awakened and nationalist students did their best to counter the anti-India activities. But this is not enough. The University authorities have to take extra precautions to ensure that no anti-India activity is undertaken on the University campus and no anti-India and pro-fundamentalist is allowed to enter the campus. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, who has also failed to deliver on every front, must assert his authority to ensure that the academic environment on the campus is not vitiated. Besides, he should rein in those who are writing anti-India articles. The University of Jammu under no situation allowed to be converted into a hub of anti-national activities. It was Mattoo who viated the atmosphere and it is for Varun Sahni to stem the rot and cleanse the university of the anti-India elements, including those who are masquerading as conflict-managers like the Choudharys. |
