He survived tsunami, but not cloudburst in Leh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU,Aug 11: The Mysore joint excise commissioner Anand Subba Rao (51), an ardent follower of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, survived the tsunami in December 2004, but was killed in the August 5 cloudbursts at Leh. His narrow escape from the tsumani did not deter him from travelling. He ventured out to see more places and people, till the Leh cloudburst caught him unawares. The joint commissioner died of respiratory problems Monday, while attempting to escape the cloudburst and the flash floods that followed. Rao and his wife Jayalakshmi Devi were among 30 tourists who had gone to Leh. Rao used to tell his colleagues of his close encounter with the tsunami on December 26, 2004. He was then on a pilgrimage to Velankanni in Tamil Nadu, when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake near the west coast of Sumatra released energy equivalent to 23,000 Hiroshima-type nuclear bombs, triggering huge tidal waves. The joint commissioner and fellow tourists were at a transit camp at Pang in Leh when the clouds opened up. As both sides of a road caved in, Rao and others took refuge in the middle of the road. Soon, Rao complained of breathlessness. Sources said his wife Jayalakshmi managed to contact army. Though he was airlifted to a hospital in Leh, his life could not be saved. Rao's wife was still at Pang. The Excise department dispatched a deputy superintendent of excise, Y Manjunath, along with Rao's brother and son to Leh to bring his body to Mysore. |
