Nearly 6,000 pilgrims from J&K to perform Haj | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT new delhi,Aug 11: This year 5,861 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir would go for Haj. This figure has been arrived at on the basis of Muslim population in the State as per the 2001 census by the Haj Committee of India. The selection of pilgrims from various States, including Jammu and Kashmir, for the Haj pilgrimage for the year 2010 has already been made by the Haj Committee of India through the computerised draw of lots, said the External Affairs Minister SM Krishna in a written reply made in the Lok Sabha today. The Minister added that the quota allotted to the States is based on the percentage of Muslim population as per 2001 census. According to the details provided by him 104,000 pilgrims from all over the country would perform Haj later this year. They are drawn from 138,188,240-strong Muslim population of the country while there are 6,793,240 Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir of whom 5,861 have been selected for Haj pilgrimage. The Minister said in his reply that "Government makes arrangements to facilitate travel, accommodation as well as other logistical support for those pilgrims choosing to go through the Haj Committee of India," Every year Muslims from all over the world gather at Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform Haj which takes place a little over two-months after the end of the month of Ramzan. This year Haj is slated to take place in mid-November while most pilgrims would start leaving for Haj after Id that falls next month. |
