BJP's shifting stances confuse | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 11: The Panthers Party leadership is highly critical of what it has called "the politics of duplicity" being practised by the state unit of the BJP. Claiming that the BJP had close links with the ruling National Conference the working chairman Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, said "it was strange that in public the BJP has been pleading for imposing Governor's rule in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir but in private it was opposed to any change in the guard." In support of his contention Harsh Dev Said that it was amazing that during the All Party meeting convened by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on Tuesday the BJP leaders opposed any demand for placing the state under the Governor's rule." He said one of the prominent BJP leader said "allow the Government headed by Omar Abdullah to continue." He said ever since Omar took over as Chief Minister the state has witnessed one problem after the other and the biggest threat to peace and communal amity has come from the recent violence protest rallies in Kashmir which were being incited by the separatists and the agencies across the LOC. Harsh said writ of separatists would run in Kashmir and that of the ruling alliance having failed to secure any response from people. He said when Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, announced his plan of convening an All Party meeting in Srinagar on July 12 the BJP was the first to announce that it would not participate. Later its leaders were first to travel to Srinagar to attend the meeting. When it was announced that Manmohan Singh had decided to convene an All Party meeting in New Delhi on August 10 the BJP was again the first party to declare that it would stay away from the meeting. Again its leaders changed their stand when they received a call from Union Home Minister, P.C. Chidambaram, and NC President, Dr Farooq Abdullah. Harsh said the leaders of the state unit may not have accepted the suggestion from Chidambaram but could not dare to ignore the one given by farooq Abdullah because the BJP leaders have been able to receive favours from the Abdullah family during the last many years. The Panthers Party leader said that "our demand for change in the guard was not the result of any personal problem" adding that the demand had been made in the interest of peace and normalcy in Kashmir. He said that the events that took place in Kashmir during the last over two months had clearly indicated simmering anger against the ruling coalition. Hence it was imperative for the centre to find a suitable alternative to Omar was to place the state under the Governor's rule. He wanted the BJP play a fair game and if it wanted to play the role of a B team to the National Conference "we have no objection" but it was a political fraud if the BJP leadership woo people of the Jammu region by playing the card of regional discrimination on one hand and befriending those very political forces that have perpetuated the level of discrimination. |
