Traffic violations, Rs 1.42 cr fine realized till July | Locations for traffic lights, mini buses' stand identified | | SUMIT SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 11: To curb the menace of traffic rules' violations, the Traffic police have initiated a number of measures which are showing some fruitful results as far as checking the law breakers. The induction of ladies police into the Traffic wing is one such step which has immensely helped the traffic police to deal more firmly with the violators. With the introduction of women police constables, the Traffic police which was, otherwise, grappling with the shortage of staff is now, somewhat, got strengthened. Suddenly the cops in blue uniform are more visible on Jammu district's roads with the result they have tightened the noose around the habitual offenders; at least the figures available with Early Times suggests so. As per data available, over 1,11,113 vehicles have been challaned and a fine to the tune of about Rs One crore and forty two thousand has been realized from violators till the month of July this year. The figure has seen a steep rise over the previous year's fine. Last year, the over all fine imposed on offenders was Rs 1.7 crore with around 1.63 lakh vehicles challaned in the process. It means figures of over all fine imposed for the current year is expected to be around Rs 2.68 crore, double than the previous year. The decision to crack whip on traffic violators was taken during a meeting of high ranking Traffic officials and Transport Commissioner. The decision was also taken keeping in view the growing incidents of road accidents. When contacted, SP traffic Zahid Manhas told ET that maximum challans are being imposed on visible offences including using mobile phone while driving, over loading, wrong parking and picking and dropping of passengers by mini bus operators at places not earmarked as stops. Sources in the department informed that to ease the traffic related problems and smoothen the vehicular movement on roads, traffic police has identified 57 points for the installation of the traffic lights in Jammu district alone. The proposal was submitted to the Transport Commissioner in a meeting held on May 17 last. The proposal for the installation of traffic lights was mooted by the then Inspector General of Traffic Police Shesh Pal Vaid two years back in a meeting with the then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. SP Traffic Zahid Manhas confirmed the report saying that very soon vehicular movement on city roads and peripheries would be regulated with the help of traffic lights. Sources added that to lessen the burden on city roads, a proposal for shifting of mini bus stand to Manda was also submitted. The piece of land is at presently in the possession of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). A letter to vacate the said piece of land was also sent to JMC and hopefully the land would be available sooner than later for establishing a mini bus stand there. |
