Need to expedite relief, rescue operations in Leh: PDP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT LEH, August 12: Expressing grief over loss of human lives and property in the devastating cloud burst followed by flash flood in Ladakh region, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today demanded that on going rehabilitation and rescue operation should be expedited to minimize hardships being faced by the affected people. The party also demanded that rescue operation to locate the missing persons also be further accelerated as large numbers of people are still untraced and helpless families of such persons have been moving from pillar to post get whereabouts of their kith and kin. A high level team of PDP comprising Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Sartaz Madani, MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain is visiting different areas of Ladakh to assess the loss. The team visited worst affected Saboo, Chubalsar areas besides Leh town and other affected habitations. PDP leaders interacted with the cross section of the people. To inquire about the hardship being faced by the people, the team interacted with leaders of the Ladakh Buddhist Association as well as with some representatives of Muslim organizations. The team also met with representatives of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC). Sartaz Madani appreciated volunteer service being rendered by the local people as well as large number of foreigners but he regretted that state government was not visible in any area. “Wherever we visited people complained about failure of the government to provide them timely relief at the time of calamity. He cautioned the government that situation was alarming in view of the ensuing winter season and authorities should not adopt causal approach in dealing with the situation.” “Ironically the government is not aware of the full extent of the damage but media hype has been created about rescue operation just to hoodwink the people”, he said. Madani asked the State Government not to take this human tragedy casually. He demanded that instead of adopting lackluster approach, government should rather press all its agencies into services to provide relief to the affected families. He pointed out that hundreds of people have been still missing and there is need to further accelerate the operation to trace such persons. PDP leader demanded that all affected persons should be given compensation and there should be complete transparency while compensation and ex-gratia relief because some people have aired apprehension in this regard. Narrating woes of the flash flood affected people, Madani said that entire area has been flooded with slush and it will take months to clear the affected area. He said that PDP team also visited the Army Hospital to inquire about the conditions of those who received injuries in the natural calamity. “There is need to provide advanced medical treatment to the injured and teams of specialist doctors should be rushed to Ladakh in this regard”, he demanded. PDP team also visited the relief camps set up by the authorities to provide shelter to those who have lost everything in the calamity. PDP leader said that it is heartening to watch how local people irrespective of their caste, creed, colour or religion are helping each other to overcome the worst ever natural calamity in this region.
